I live in the Canadian Rockies, and stick mostly to well groomed green runs, but would like to progress to more challenging blue runs. I am 5'6" and 140 pounds. What kind of skis are appropriate for my needs?
Big mountain (aka back country) skis are designed for skiing ungroomed deep powder. Fat/wide, medium to high stiffness. Newer models are even more deep powder specifics where they have reverse camber, rockered tips/tails, reverse sidecut, pintail, swallowtail, or combinations of these. These skis are great on powder but somewhat cumbersome and requiring some effort on groomer. They are not for carving. And they are not for beginners.
Freeride skis are designed for 60-80% groomer + 20-40% ungroomed/powder. Semi fat, all range of stiffness. Popular in the West where we sometimes get combinations of groomer and powder on the same days. They make Freeride skis for all levels.
All Mountain skis are designed mainly for groomer. Kind of the "standard" kind, if you will. Typical parabolic shape and width, all range of stiffness. Narrower than Freeride, float a bit less, carve a bit more. They make All Mountain skis for all levels.
